I go back to Rye, my fave town, quite often so I’ll tell you if I see him knocking about. He’d just had a big life shock, that’s for sure. Who could blame him for having a pint or three?

No, actually he was upset about something, it was obvious. He was very agitated. I sat down beside him a la James and chatted – gave him some understanding/company even though quite frankly I’m suffering from compassion fatigue myself these days.
You know, when you give out your energy freely to try and help another, only to be treated like trash? And that heartless person knows well who they are.
This old boy looked very distressed – as if he had just lost his wife of 50 years. As I say, we shouldn’t think this kind of thing and stage of life won’t ever happen to us.
