About Michael St.Mark

Conceptual / experimental multi-discipline artist, writer and photographer. Art influencer and founder of London Dada, recalling Dada's original aims and principles as envisaged by it's founder Hugo Ball. Eschews the often politically-motivated taboo on expressions of critical thought within art. Admiring Duchamp in going beyond the seemingly endless infatuation with the ' pretty picture' retinal and instead refusing to accept the standards and practices of an established corrupt art world and creatively stifling conventions that are still considered essential to attain fame and financial success: refusing to repeat himself or to develop one recognizable style to placate the commercial needs of the market.

The Two Piece Reclining Figure was something of a breakthrough. In the later half of the Fifties Moore had created a series of seated women. When he made his first two piece reclining figure however, without even sketching it beforehand, he was amazed by the unexpected views it offered. The front view doesn’t enable one to foresee the back view. As you move round it, the two parts overlap or they open up and there’s space between. It feels like a journey.

Based on Duchamp’s 1920s Great Glass series, where the Dada artist left a pane of glass on a high rise apartment ledge in Berlin for several weeks, to collect the city’s airborne particles; in this instance we are looking up from an underground facility in Hampstead, to see over 100 years of London residues ingrained into a Victorian dual-coloured leaded lights grating, inset into the pavement above.

What a lovely piece of vehicularly-altered found street sculpture – if one of Serota’s young darlings installed it in the Tate Mod they’d even call it art . . .( don’t give him ideas, he’ll be extremely dangerous – Ed.).
